WTTC Asks Policy Makers to Create Market-Based Climate Change Policies

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has issued a Communiqué during the International Climate Change Negotiations in Durban, which asks that policy makers keep costs in mind while creating climate change policy.

In 2009 travel and tourism leaders pledged to halve carbon emissions by 2035, according to the WTTC’s Leading the Challenge on Climate Change report. However, green policies come with a cost. The Communiqué asks that any new policy be based on market prices so the industry can continue to create the amount of jobs it currently provides. According to WTTC, travel and tourism generates 9 percent of global GDP and provides about 260 million jobs.
