Turkey Bombings Prompt Security UpdateOctober 12, 2015 By: Adam Leposa
A terrorist on Saturday in Ankara, Turkey, has killed at least 97 people, Reuters reports. Two bombs struck a rally of pro-Kurdish activists and civic groups near the Turkish capital's main train station.
"If you consider the way the attack happened and the general trend of it, we have identified Islamic State as the primary focus," Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told Turkey's NTV television, Reuters said. "It was definitely a suicide bombing...DNA tests are being conducted. It was determined how the suicide bombers got there. We're close to a name, which points to one group."
According to ABC News, at least 50 suspects with alleged links to the Islamic State have been detained by police.
The bombing has prompted the U.S. Embassy in Turkey to issue a security message for travelers in the country.
"The U.S. Embassy in Ankara would like to remind U.S. citizens of the importance of maintaining security vigilance and to take appropriate steps to ensure their ongoing security awareness in light of these tragic events and the continued security situation in Turkey," the embassy statement said. "U.S. citizens are reminded to exercise caution in the vicinity of large gatherings, as even peaceful gatherings can turn confrontational. Review your personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings, including local events, and monitor local news stations for updates. Maintain a high level of vigilance, take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security, and follow instructions of local authorities."
According to BGN News, China and 15 other countries have issued travel warnings for Turkey following the attack.
“Turkish officials have announced that the country is at risk of major terrorist attacks. Considering that the security situation in Turkey is a major concern, the Chinese embassy and consulate warns Chinese citizens to be careful on touristic visits to Turkey and recommends that they minimize heading outside or into crowds,” BGN reported the Chinese Embassy in Ankara read.
Other countries that have issued travel warnings include the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Canada, Poland, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Ireland, New Zealand, Denmark, the Netherlands and Iran.
