In London, Heathrow airport has revealed three different proposals for a third runway, according to the Guardian. But there's a downside: Tens of thousands of homes will reportedly be either under new flight paths or at risk of demolition.
The airport, Europe's largest, said that the new runway would lie either to the south-west, the north-west or the north of the two current runways, at a cost of £14-18 billion, increasing flights to 740,000 a year. All options would require the construction of a major new airport terminal.
The southern plan would see the entire neighbouring village of Stanwell Moor demolished, but the paper predicts that the major opposition will come from parts of Twickenham and Richmond, where wealthy homeowners would find themselves under the flight path.
It's not all bad news for locals, however: The paper also noted that Heathrow expects to fund the runway on its own rather using taxpayer money.
It is worth noting that all three options would allow the construction of a fourth runway sometime in the future.
