UK Rail Workers Vote to Strike

March 25, 2010 By: Jena Tesse Fox

Just when we thought Europe's travel strikes couldn't get worse, the Times is reporting that the leaders of the UK's National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) are meeting today to consider setting strike dates for the first national rail stoppage in 16 years.

Signalers and maintenance workers belonging to the RMT union have reportedly already voted in favor of a walkout, and the union’s executive committee is due to meet this afternoon to consider whether or not to call a strike.

Railway insiders say that they expect strikes to begin April 1, setting the stage for a stoppage over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend. Millions of rail passengers would face disruption, and congestion would spill on to the roads at what is already expected to be an extremely busy weekend.
