Journey to Northernmost U.S. City for Eskimo Encounter

At a mere 800 miles from the North Pole, Barrow, Alaska, is considered the northernmost city in the U.S. The sun literally never sets there for 66 days starting around May 10; then, of course, the sun doesn't shine in Barrow for more than two months after mid-November. If clients would like to venture to this outpost, they can go with an operator specializing in the region: Northern Alaska Tour Company ( Its "Barrow Adventure" includes roundtrip flight across the Arctic Circle from Fairbanks and an overnight in Barrow, where guests tour the Inupiat Eskimo village and enjoy ceremonial song and dance, local crafts and traditional games. They also get to walk along the shore of the Arctic Ocean. Trip costs $599, with departures May 13 to September 14. Travel agents can speak to any reservations specialist at 800-474-1986 or 907-474-8600, or e-mail [email protected] .
