On March 13, 2012 25-year-old Dallas Seavey became the youngest winner of the 1,000 mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Dallas and the Seavey family own and operate IdidaRide Sled Dog Tours, which offer tours of Alaska via dog sled or helicopter.
The Exit Glacier by Dog Team Tour is a 3.5 hour tour through Resurrection Valley to Exit Glacier on a wide trail where travelers can learn to mush a dog team. The Glacier Dog Sledding – Girdwood Tour offers a 15 minute helicopter tour followed by an instructional lesson and the chance to either mush a dog team, or merely ride along. The Real Alaska Tour – Seward takes visitors to Mile 0 of the Iditarod Trail and through Kenai Fjords National Park. Tours through the dog kennels where you can meet the champion dogs are available.
IdidaRide offers a wide array of tours in both the summer and winter, and is accommodating to families with young children. Lodging is available at IdidaRide in either a Couples Cabin or a Family Cabin.
The Seavey family moved to Seward, Alaska in 1963 with the sole intention of mushing dogs. Five members of the family have successfully completed the Iditarod Trail Dog Sled Race.
