Asia Boosts Hawaii's Airlift SceneOctober 4, 2011 By: Jena Tesse Fox
Promising news for Hawaii's airlift scene: The Hawaii Tourism Authority’s Airline Seat Capacity Outlook Report for the fourth quarter of this year will remain steady through 2011. Despite slight declines in air seats in the second and third quarters, increases from Japan, Other Asia, Canada and Oceania helped 2011 projections exceed 2010.
Hawaii will receive a strong boost in airlift from Japan for the remainder of 2011 and through 2012. Delta Air Lines will increase service from Osaka to Honolulu from seven to nine flights weekly from March 2012 through April 2012 and again from July 2012 through the end of 2012. This will add an additional 430 seats per week. Additionally, from October 2011 through January 2012, Japan Airlines will be up-gauging their daily Nagoya to Honolulu service from a Boeing 777-200ER to a Boeing 767-300ER, providing an additional 118 seats daily. These additional seats are not reflected in the Airline Seat Capacity Outlook Report for the fourth quarter of 2011. Together, the increases in airlift will provide an estimated 20,570 more air seats through 2012.
