Exclusive: How to Spend a Rainy Day in Hawaii

The National Weather Service in Honolulu is reporting "persistent downpours" in Oahu today. As such, we reached out to Tamara Aalto, product manager at local tour operator All About Hawaii, to get advice on how visitors should spend a rainy day in the islands.

"Do I really need an excuse to go shopping or spend the afternoon in luxury at the hotel's day spa?" she quipped off the bat, before suggesting a visit to the Ala Moana Shopping Center (pictured), one of the largest open-air malls in the world. The Center is not fully enclosed, she acknowledged, but noted that its 200+ stores would offer shelter from the rain. "The Royal Hawaiian Center in Waikiki has four floors and 100+ shops," she continued, also noting some good restaurant options like Wolfgang Puck's Steakhouse.

Other indoor attractions include Oahu's Bishop Museum, the largest natural and cultural history museum in Hawaii, and the Queen Emma Summer Palace, a historic landmark.

If an outdoor luau is canceled due to weather, Aalto recommends an indoor dinner show. "A good alternative show for families on Maui is Kupanaha Magic Dinner Theater at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel…or Maui Theatre's ulalena," she says. "For a cultural dinner show on Oahu, I would suggest Creation - A Polynesian Journey at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani showroom."
