Hawaiian Airlines Begins Charging for First Checked Bag

July 31, 2008 By: Kirk Cassels

Hawaiian Airlines will charge $15 for a first checked bag on flights between the mainland and the islands for all tickets purchased after August 1 for travel on or after October 1. The Honolulu-based airline also announced that it will adjust its frequent flier program by increasing the mileage needed to redeem award tickets.

"The company's need to cover high fuel costs with its sense of obligation to provide the local community in Hawaii with sustainable frequent, reliable and affordable service," said Mark Dunkerley, Hawaiian's president and chief executive.

The airline already charges $25 for a second bag on mainland flights and $17 on interisland flights.

Meanwhile, the minimum frequent flier miles required for a roundtrip interisland ticket will rise from 10,000 to 15,000 miles for travel starting September 1. The minimum for mainland flights will increase from 35,000 to 40,000 miles.
