Hawaii's Pro Bowl Winning Streak Broken

February 9, 2009 By: Mark Rogers

This week is Pro Bowl week in Hawaii – an annual tradition that pumps loads of tourist cash into the local economy. The Pro Bowl has been held at Waikiki’s Aloha Stadium for 29 years, but this streak will be broken when the Pro Bowl moves to Dolphin Stadium in Miami next year. In 2008 the event netted $28 million dollars for Hawaii in both direct and ancillary spending. It’s not just the cash infusion that will be missed – the Pro Bowl also does a first rate job of marketing Hawaii with abundant visuals and destination coverage. The Hawaii Tourism Authority is negotiating with the NFL for the event’s return, and is proposing that the next two Pro Bowls are played in Hawaii.
