Hurricane Felicia Downgraded to Category 3 Before Landfall in Hawaii

August 7, 2009 By: Jena Tesse Fox

Hurricane Felicia, which was a category 4 hurricane with winds of 140 mph on Thursday, has been downgraded, the Weather Channel is reporting.

As of early Friday morning, Felicia was located about 1,635 miles of east of Hilo, Hawaii, while moving west-northwest. Maximum winds are now at 115 mph, making it a category 3 hurricane.

The forecast continues to indicate Felicia moving in a more westerly direction this weekend, which would bring it near Hawaii by early next week. It is expected to reach the Big Island of Hawaii as a weakened tropical depression late Monday into Tuesday.

At this time it appears potential impacts to Hawaii will include gusty winds, locally heavy rain and elevated surf.
