New Law Keeps Hawaii Superferry in Service

November 14, 2007 By: Travel Agent Central Contributor Travel Agent

A new law allows Hawaii Superferry to sail while the state conducts an environmental review of the ship. The ferry will be permitted to sail from Oahu to Maui and Kauai while complying with a fresh set of 40 conditions.

One of these conditions is a speed limit of 25 knots (28 mph) between January 1 and April 30, which is the humpback whales’ breeding season.

This law comes after a Maui court decided Hawaii Superferry should not operate until the state conducts an environmental impact study. The high-speed passenger and car ferry service ran into troubled waters when it debuted last summer, facing protests from citizens and environmentalists.
