The Ritz-Carlton Spa, Kapalua Opens

The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua on Maui puts the final touches to an extensive $180 million renovation with the opening of The Ritz-Carlton Spa, Kapalua. The spa has 15 treatment rooms and features two outdoor couples’ hale (cabanas), men’s and women’s relaxation areas with the depiction of lava stone grotto areas, steam rooms, saunas and whirlpools, and the only coed indoor/outdoor relaxation area in Hawaii with a whirlpool overlooking a taro patch garden.

Natural Hawaiian materials are used throughout the spa, including groves of tall bamboo, basalt stone floors, and carved wood panels. A nice touch is raw natural ingredients of spa treatments placed in alcoves, such as Hawaiian sea salt, kukui nuts, awapuhi and ginger. All the treatment rooms have iPod docking stations with pre-programmed music selections and robe warmers.

Rather than checking in at a counter, guests are greeted by a spa concierge who escorts them to their treatment area.

The Ritz-Carlton Spa, Kapalua will offer a range of Hawaiian-based spa treatments, including an authentic Lomi Lomi Massage. Many of the spa treatments will incorporate natural ingredients such as pineapple, papaya, kukui oil, coconut, pumpkin and blueberry. Kids will enjoy a playful array of manicures and pedicures, including the Choco Holic Pedicure, comprising a chocolate foot bath, chocolate scrub, chocolate mask and chocolate massage.  Packages will also be offered for teenagers, including the Bring a Friend Package, which will include a 50 minute Lomi Lomi Massage or a 50 minute Ritz-Carlton Signature Facial, side by side, followed by a Fabulous Feet Pedicure. The new 24-hour Fitness Center has views of the Pacific Ocean and will offer a range of fitness classes including yoga and Pilates.

Mauna Lani Goes Green

When it comes to being “green,” Mauna Lani on Hawaii’s Big Island is a pioneer in the resort industry, having been in the game for more than a decade.

In April, Mark Glickman, director of resort marketing, spoke about “The Power of Green” to attendees at the annual Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association's national conference. Earlier this month, the Travel Channel shot the Big Island resort for a new eco-conscious program called Extreme Green. The program highlighted Mauna Lani's solar panels, which generate the most solar electric power of any luxury resort in the world, and the resort’s preservation of its ancient Hawaiian fishponds. The program will air this fall on the Travel Channel.

Mauna Lani Resort sits oceanfront on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. The resort features the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows, Mauna Lani Spa and the Francis H. I‘I Brown Golf Courses.

Two Matai fam trips, which recently took place in April and May, became the launch pad for giving back to two Fijian communities. Special needs families and an orphanage were the beneficiaries of the kind outreach by U.S.-based travel agents, U.S. travel representatives and Fiji Visitors Bureau staff.

Ten agents participated and held a clothing drive for 20 families. A collection was also taken to help one of the children pursue continued education. The group visited many tourist regions during their visit to Fiji, including the Yasawas, Mamanucas, the North, Pacific Harbour, Coral Coast and Nadi.
