Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Gain Protected Status

The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands will be the world's largest protected marine area following federal action scheduled to take place on June 15. The Council on Environmental Quality is establishing the northern part of the Hawaii archipelago as a national monument. The federal action follows the state's designation last September of all state waters within the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands as a fully protected state marine refuge.
