Hawaii will see some exciting festivals and celebrations in the upcoming months, including the famous Merrie Monarch Festival. Courtesy of the Los Angeles Times, here are some events to recommend to your clients.
The annual three-day festival in the state’s capital, in its 16th year, will feature a full calendar, culminating in the Waikiki Grand Parade (March 14, along Kalakaua Avenue). Showcasing the cultural diversity of the Asia-Pacific region, the festival celebrate the bonds between Hawaii and the Pacific Rim. Exhibition and performance participants will hail from Hawaii, as well as Australia, Tahiti, the Philippines, China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan and Alaska.
Prince Kuhio Celebration of the Arts
A long-distance canoe race, ukelele lessons, a hula gathering, a luau, craft fair and various performances and cultural demonstrations will be part of this celebration honoring the birthday and birthplace of a Hawaiian monarch.
Hilo, Big Island
The Merrie Monarch Festival
This weeklong Hawaiian cultural event features arts and crafts, dance and music performances and a parade. The famous event’s focal point, though, is its three-day hula competition, including ancient and modern styles.

Kona Chocolate Festival
Heaven for chocoholics! Hosted by Naalehu Theatre and held at the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa, the festival will feature an evening gala, which will include a chocolate cook-off among regional chefs, chocolate body art, a chocolate fountain, salsa music and other entertainment.
East Maui Taro Festival
This culinary and cultural event in honor of the regional staple taro will consist of an all-day festival on April 24. The next day, participants can enjoy a taro pancake breakfast and excursions to Kahanu Garden and Kapahu Living Farm.
