KapohoKine Adventures, a Hawaiian tour operator located on Hawaii Island, recently announced that, for the first time since August 2013, lava has entered the ocean from Hawaii Island.
KapohoKine Adventures is an expedition company that gives clients a firsthand education on previous and new lava flows. On July 4, KapohoKine Adventures restarted its Lava Expedition tour, taking visitors to see the spectacular red molten lava of Kilauea Volcano.
From the Puna District on the east side, the company’s headquarters and home to the best lava viewing locations, clients will be driven as close as possible before setting off on foot to find the most recent surface outbreaks and ocean entries.
The strenuous 6-8 mile roundtrip hike is worth it. Skylights in the lava tube system and surface flows glow bright red as the crackle and hiss of escaping gasses and liquid rock changing to solid grow louder as the lava slowly marches to the sea. Tour provides transportation, guide, military-grade flashlights, walking sticks, sunblock, dinner and drinks. The tour is $209 per person from Kona/Waikoloa and $129 per person from Hilo.
