Golden Gate Details ExpansionMarch 28, 2012 By: Andrew Sheivachman
The Golden Gate, the original Las Vegas Fremont Street casino founded in 1906, is undergoing its first major renovation in 50 years to bring a 21st century boutique edge to the classic Las Vegas experience.
"The rataionale is to take this very classic property and restore it to the first-class status it had when it opened in 1906," said co-owner Mark Brandenburg. "We have a wonderful historical building and now that we're well past a century old, we felt the timing was right to elevate the condition of the property, restore it as a first-class boutique hotel and casino and do it in a way that's different from anything else that’s ever been done before in Las Vegas. We can do that because we're not a megaresort, we're not going to build a volcano."
The property's entire casino floor will be renovated, along with hotel rooms. The property will retain its iconic "Dancing Dealers," hailing back to the age of the flapper. "We want to do something that’s authentic Las Vegas, but at the same time is consistent with people's expectations when they come here, which is to have a unique experience, a good-time type of experience they're not going to get back home," said Brandenburg. "Our property has always been there and been about cutting edge Las Vegas adventure and we feel there's a wonderful opportunity to go ahead and elevate the status of the property."
Rooms will expand but the hotel is looking to stay true to its intimate, old-fashioned feel. A new five-story, 16-suite tower is under construction adjacent to the property."We've been renovating over the course of the last couple years in a variety of ways and people will tell us they absolutely enjoy the boutique nature of the hotel," said Brandenburg. "Room size makes a difference, ours are more intimate. The entire casino floor is going to be renovated and have a more upscale feel. Parts of the first floor are already completed."
The hotel will also be adding botique suites to appeal to a more affluent Las Vegas visitor, along with a plethora of technological upgrades. "These are going to be nice premium rooms, upscale," said Brandenburg. "The two rooms on the top floor occupy entire floor, that will be our penthouse suites. These are product we haven’t had before. We have 106 rooms in service right now, many of which built in 1906. They're nice, but theyre small. It'll give us the ability to broaden our reach for some higher-limit players. We're now offering crdits for the first time and expanding our maximum bets. We're also developing a new high-limit room that will be off to the side of the current pit."
The renovation is slated for completion this Summer. "Right now we are targeting for rooms to be available during the second week in May," said Brandenburg. "Some will be available but we are expecting completion overall by the end of June; we're opening sections of building in phases as we go forward."
