Keeping Cool in the Vegas Desert

July 1, 2008 By: Glenn Haussman Travel Agent

With the hot desert sun taunting Las Vegas visitors during summer months, it’s time to think about keeping cool. We’ve seen more than one good time ruined for travelers unprepared to do battle with the sweltering heat. Many visitors are simply unprepared to handle Sin City when that mercury hits 100º or more. Be warned, it can creep up on you.

Fortunately we’ve learned our lessons on how to keep the fun going even on the most brutal of days. Of course the obvious answer to keeping cool is to hang out by the pool, taking frequent dips inter-dispersed with spritzes of misty water. However, many people don’t want to loll under the sun all day and would rather be out having experiences.

For those clients, it’s critical to stress that if they choose to take a meandering walk up and down the Strip that it has to be done early in the morning or after 6 p.m., when the relentless heat starts to abate. The desert heat can quickly sap a body of energy, making it tough to go out in the evening, so this is a must.

Suggest they spend bigger chunks of time in a single resort instead of hopping around from place to place. For example, combine shopping, lunch and hitting the tables in one resort, rather than three. Additionally, drinking bottled water can be costly. So tell them to buy one– or bring an empty bottle from home– and refill it at water fountains for free.

The Las Vegas Monorail is a cool way to get around town, literally and figuratively. Soak up the air conditioning with an all-day pass for $9. The monorail stops at most of the properties on the east side of the Strip between MGM Grand and the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Another fun way to keep cool while moving around is with a Segway rental. They’ll keep the breeze blowing while cruising down Las Vegas Boulevard at up to 12 miles per hour. Rent them for $25 an hour or $125 for 24 hours.

What do you think of this $type?
