Las Vegas Casino Workers Union Launches Website With Updates on Labor DisputesJune 3, 2013 By: Newswire
The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 has introduced www.VegasTravelAlert.org, a website intended as a service for meeting and convention planners and all other travelers who need to know whether labor disputes could affect their plans in Las Vegas.
The website will be regularly updated with information about actual and potential labor disputes affecting Las Vegas casinos and the status of contract negotiations. Visitors to the site may sign up for email updates, and can also find strategies to protect their event or travel plans from the possibility of being impacted by labor disputes.
Union contracts covering 44,000 hospitality workers in Las Vegas expired on June 1, 2013. This includes the majority of workers on the Las Vegas Strip. If new contracts are not settled, there is the potential for labor disputes, even strikes, to result.
The Culinary Workers Union is one of the largest and fastest-growing union locals in the country. The vast majority of the union’s 55,000 members work at casinos on the world famous Las Vegas Strip and in the city’s downtown. They also work in food service outlets at McCarran International Airport and industrial laundries throughout the Las Vegas valley. Members of the Culinary Union work in a range of jobs, including cocktails, bell, kitchen workers, cooks, food servers, housekeepers, porters, and many more.
Culinary 226 members continue to fight for quality and affordable health care, a secure retirement, owning a home and sending their kids to college. The Union remains strong with a growing membership and thousands of active union members.
