Free Las Vegas
By Glenn Haussman

With the economy putting the damper on seemingly limitless vacation budgets, visitors to Las Vegas are feeling the pinch. So even though they may not want to cancel their dream vacation to the Las Vegas Strip, it’s likely they’ll want to spend a little less than they might have last year.

Fortunately, there is plenty of stuff to do either for free or on the cheap. Take entertainment, for example, where there are myriad options of no-cost stuff to experience. A group can spend virtually the entire evening traipsing up and down Las Vegas Boulevard, taking in plenty of complimentary entertainment.

Treasure Island, which is mostly being called TI these days, offers The Sirens of TI. Replete with pirates, a sinking ship, fireworks and plenty of scantily clad ladies, this show is a swashbuckling 17th century adventure. It’s held four times nightly, every 90 minutes starting at 7:00 pm.

The ubiquitous volcano at Mirage was the first major free attraction when it debuted in 1989. Now, it’s being recreated with 21st century technology to make the explosive show even more exciting. When it reopens later this year, expect to be blown away.

Meanwhile, Bellagio offers what many consider the signature free show on the Strip– The Fountains of Bellagio. Opera, classical, and country hits accompany choreographed movements of hundreds of fountains. It’s larger than life beauty on a grand scale. Shows are every half hour before 8:00 pm, and then every 15 minutes until midnight.

MGM Grand is known for its iconic lion mascot, and they have the real thing, too. Feast your eyes on The Lion Habitat, which features a live lion from a nearby ranch every day. Sometimes they sit right overhead, which provides an amazingly close point of view through the attraction’s clear plastic walls and floor.

At Rio All Suites, starting at 6:00 pm daily and running hourly through midnight, is The Masquerade Show in the Sky. The entire show takes place above visitors’ heads. It’s been closed the last few weeks as an entirely new show is set to debut on May 22. Management promises all new sets, costumes and choreography.

CityCenter Celebrates Topping Out of First Tower in Vdara Condo Hotel

CityCenter commemorated the “topping out” of its 57-story Vdara Condo Hotel, the first of six distinctive high-rise towers that will be topped within the coming months. The completion of Vdara’s structure is a milestone for the construction progress of CityCenter as it moves toward opening in late 2009.

Located between Bellagio and CityCenter’s gaming resort, Vdara’s 57-story tower will host approximately 1,495 residential units, including studios, deluxe studios, one- and two-bedroom residences as well as one- and two-bedroom penthouses (single story and two-story), ranging from 500 to 1,650 square feet. Amenities and services will include a luxurious spa and salon, pool with cabanas for added privacy, a fitness center, a destination restaurant, 24-hour concierge service, state-of-the-art conference and meeting facilities, in-room dining, housekeeping and valet parking. When a unit isn’t in use, owners will have the option to rent out their units on a nightly basis.

Bauman Rare Books Opens at The Shoppes at The Palazzo

Bauman Rare Books, a familiar landmark on Madison Avenue in New York for lovers of antiquarian books and autographs, announces its opening at The Shoppes at The Palazzo in Las Vegas. Visitors to the new luxury retail center can take home something
truly unusual, such as an inscribed copy of Hemingway's Old Man and the Sea
or a 1550 printing of Chaucer.

According to Dave Bauman, who entered the rare and antiquarian book market more than 35 years ago in Philadelphia, Las Vegas seems, at first glance, an unusual choice for a rare bookstore. “Thanks to the city's 40 million-plus worldwide tourists and visitor traffic that turns over every three days, we are ideally positioned to cultivate a whole new generation of collectors,” he says. Though Bauman's inventory is constantly changing due to the dynamic nature of collecting, his inventory, at any given time, includes more than 8,000 rare volumes and documents. From the milestones of American history, literary classics, landmarks in the history of ideas, revolutionary scientific and medical works, beloved children's books, splendidly illustrated art books and more, Bauman's inventory is vast and comprehensive.
