Vegas to Hire Terrorism AnalystAugust 19, 2009 By: Travel Agent Central Contributor
Travelers to Las Vegas can feel a bit safer as they spend, win or lose money in the popular city. Last week, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) voted to create a terrorism intelligence analyst position to work with the Metro police in the Southern Nevada Counterterrorism Fusion Center. The board voted to spend nearly $480,285 over three years for the position, which they hope will also assure business travelers, meeting planners, and conventioneers of their safety.
“We have the only convention center in the country, maybe the world, that has its own police substation,” said Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, who heads the authority’s board. “We have the only convention center in the country, maybe the world, that has its own fire station.”
According to the Las Vegas Sun, intelligence analyst would be appointed by Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie and would serve as a liaison to the LVCVA on terrorist activities. Metro officials told the Sun that there have been no major terrorism threats to Las Vegas but they recognize the city is a potential target.
