USVI Aims to Attract National Attention to Its Small Hotels

August 5, 2009 By: Joe Pike

The Virgin Islands Daily News is reporting the U.S. Virgin Islands’ small hotels— hotels with 50 rooms or less— are getting a big marketing boost from the Department of Tourism. The Department is launching a national advertising promotion designed to increase occupancy rates before the peak tourist season kicks into high gear.

A small hotels package called "Intimate Treasures" was launched in June. The package encourages travelers to book a stay at a small hotel in the Virgin Islands before October 31 by offering coupons and gifts. The Department of Tourism is spending $145,000 on national advertising for the promotion and could spend up to $200,000 on the coupons and giveaways depending on how many packages are booked. Also, a 12-week advertising campaign in USA Today's travel section began last week. In addition to the paid advertising, Tourism spokeswoman Allegra Kean-Moorehead said the story has been picked up by many other media outlets that has increased exposure for the package at no cost.
