Report: Cardiff Hotels Raising Prices for OlympicsApril 18, 2012 By: Jena Tesse Fox
A benefit of Britain's very impressive rail service is that visitors can stay in one city and easily commute to London (or any other stop along the line) for a day trip. In fact, with the Olympics around the corner (100 days!), out-of-town hotels are looking like a great option for saving some money and still having easy access to urban events.
But hoteliers throughout the country may have a different idea: Visitors to Cardiff will have to pay up to four times the normal rate for a hotel room during the Olympic games, according to an article on WalesOnline.co.uk.
Hoteliers across the city have reportedly increased room rates ahead of a number of events being held at the Millennium Stadium. The stadium is the first venue to host an Olympic event, with two women’s football matches being held on Wednesday, July 25, two days before the official opening ceremony in London. The Travelodge on St Mary Street in the city center reportedly increased its room rates by 279 percent compared to the week before the games gets underway.
Ironically, the news comes after Tessa Jowell, the shadow minister for the Olympics, said the Government must tackle the “scandal of extortionate price rises” in hotels during 2012.
