Hollywood actor George Clooney has married his fiance Amal Alamuddin in a secret ceremony in Venice.

The couple wed in a private ceremony with a handful of close friends.

They were reportedly due to marry on Monday but tonight the star's agent said they had tied the knot.

His spokesman Stan Rosenfield said: "George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin were married today (September 27) in a private ceremony in Venice, Italy."

His wife, 36, has taken part in human rights work including representing WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Clooney, 53, has owned a home in northern Italy for years.

Clooney, who owns a villa on Lake Como, arrived in Venice with his fiancée on Thursday, for what the Italian press called “the wedding of the year”, and as their motor launch – named Amore or Love – swept past the city’s famous gondolas to the Hotel Cipriani, fans gathered on bridges to wave to the couple.

The marriage ceremony is believed to have taken place at the 16th-century Palazzo Cavalli, which not overlooks the Grand Canal.
