Bermuda Escapes Direct Hit From Hurricane Igor

Hurricane Igor moved past Bermuda early Monday with strong winds and heavy rain but no severe damage as the island escaped an originally anticipated direct hit.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Igor will continue moving away from the island and pass offshore of the southeastern tip of Newfoundland on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the Bermuda Department of Tourism told Travel Agent, “From what we’ve heard from hoteliers, they escaped remarkably well. The Government is currently assessing the Causeway leading to the airport and that will help determine when the airport can re-open.”

Police received several reports of downed power lines and trees blocking roadways, but no injuries were immediately reported.
