A second W Hotel in Singapore could be in the works—that's if Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide gets its way.
“We would love to have a W in downtown Singapore and we are looking at different sites,” Anthony Ingham, global brand leader for W Hotels Worldwide, tells Today Online. “We are, however, very particular where we would want to put a W Hotel and the definition of what a W must be. So it’s a case of waiting for the right piece of land at a perfect spot, the right time, and the right partner. We are nearly always new-built.”
This downtown hotel would be the second W in the world's only island city-state after the W Singapore Sentosa Cove (pictured above). Both of the Singapore properties managed by Starwood—the St Regis Singapore and the W Singapore Sentosa Cove—are owned by the Hong Leong Group, a diversified property developer.
Putting a flagship W hotel in downtown Singapore “makes sense” as a complement for the W Sentosa Cove, Ingham said. “It would be a right mix. Starwood has other brands in Singapore and as we go through the merger with Marriott, together we will have many hotels in Singapore.”
The W Hotels brand, Ingham said, is set to double over the next five to six years, with a goal of 75 hotels globally by 2020. W currently has 46 hotels open, and a further 33 deals have been announced. Another 10 are being “worked on.”
The Asia-Pacific region has 10 operating W Hotels. Another 13 are under construction and a further five or six are in earlier stages of the planning process. Ingham expects the region to have 30 hotels “in the foreseeable future.”
