From expanded family sailings to new itineraries timed to coincide with the herring run, Alaskan Dream Cruises is offering a number of new options for travelers headed to Alaska in 2018, cruise line representatives tell Travel Agent.
For the 2018 – 2019 season, the locally owned, small ship cruise line is expanding its dedicated family sailings to three. Hosted onboard the Chichagof Dream, these sailings include a number of expanded amenities for families and multigenerational travelers, including an additional kids-only activity leader, who during the school year serves as Sitka’s middle school science teacher. While the sailings welcome children of all ages, the activities are geared toward the seven – 14 age range, and include soft science activities, performance, art and writing. If they’re brave enough, kids will also have the chance to join the “Killer Whale Club” by taking the plunge into the cold Alaskan waters. Children on these itineraries get a 30 percent discount, double the line’s regular 15 percent discount for children.
Good to know: The Chichagof Dream has a number of cabins that are an especially good fit for families. AAA cabins can be configured to have two sets of bunk beds, sleeping up to four children together. Additionally, the ship’s two-bedroom suites provide space for families who want to stay together.
New Roundtrip Juneau Itinerary
2018 will also see the cruise line introduce a new variation of its seven-night itinerary. Instead of sailing from Sitka to Juneau or the reverse, the itinerary will sail roundtrip from Juneau, with a port call in Sitka. The new route will allow the cruise line’s ships to spend two full days in Glacier Bay, with a Park Ranger and a Huna Tlingit naturalist staying onboard overnight to offer their insights and expertise to guests.
The new itinerary variant will also call at northern Baranof Island, for even more adventure activities for guests.The variant will apply to one sailing each in June and August.
New Herring Run Sailings
Finally, 2018 will see the cruise line expand sailings on the 10-passenger Misty Fjord earlier, with new sailings taking place in March and April for the first time. These new sailings will coincide with the herring run, which draws a wide array of wildlife to the Sitka Sound.
Guests sail with a captain, naturalist and chef. Rates start from $3,290 per person.
