Apparent Murder-Suicide Occurs on Holland America Ship from Tampa

ryndamIn a bizarre incident, last week, two guests onboard Holland America's Ryndam were found dead in their stateroom in what the line says appears to be a murder-suicide. The FBI is investigating.

El Nuevo Dia newspaper reported that Efrain Santiago, a spokesman for the Puerto Rico Port Authority, told the media that the cleaning staff on the ship had discovered the deceased passengers after knocking on the stateroom door.

The tragedy came to light while the ship was in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Holland America said in a statement that "the cabin was immediately secured and the authorities were notified, including the FBI. We are cooperating fully with the investigation and the authorities will make the official determination on what occurred."

The cruise line's statement continued: "We are terribly saddened by this tragic event and our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of these guests at this difficult time."

A police spokesman in San Juan told the Associated Press last week that the couple were from Ohio, in their 50s and that blood was found in the cabin. That said, the investigation is continuing and it's not yet known exactly what transpired.

The ship departed March 29 on a 14-day southern Caribbean sailing, roundtrip from Tampa.
