Two Carnival Cruise Line ships collided in Cozumel the morning of Friday, December 20, a spokesperson for the cruise line has confirmed to Travel Agent. The Carnival Glory collided with the Carnival Legend; the Carnival Glory had been maneuvering to dock when it made contact with the other ship, which was already alongside.
“We are assessing the damage but there are no issues that impact the seaworthiness of either ship,” a Carnival spokesperson said. “We have advised guests from both ships to enjoy their day ashore in Cozumel. There is one reported minor injury of a Carnival Glory guest that occurred when a group of guests were evacuated from the dining room on Decks 3 and 4.”
There will be no impact to either ship’s itinerary, according to the cruise line.
A video of the incident posted to Twitter by Matthew Bruin shows the two ships colliding. The Carnival Legend’s bow appears to tear through a number of windows on the Carnival Glory’s aft section. A version of the video, which has been edited to remove explicit language, is available from NBC 14 News.
The Carnival Legend is a Spirit-class ship with a capacity of 2,124 passengers, while the slightly larger Carnival Glory is a Conquest-class cruise ship with a 2,980-passenger capacity. Both ships operate Western Caribbean cruises that include calls at Cozumel, with the Carnival Legend sailing out of Tampa and the Carnival Glory operating out of New Orleans.
