Celebrity Edge Preview: The New Ship's Grand Plaza

Celebrity Cruises has released new details on its upcoming cruise ship, the Celebrity Edge, this time with a look at the ship's Grand Plaza

Designed by Patrick Jouin and Sanjit Manku of Jouin Manku Studio (credited with creating world-famous works like the Alain Ducasse au Plaza Athénée and the Jules Verne restaurant in the Eiffel Tower), The Grand Plaza, a new space within the ship, aims to mix simplicity with modernity. Spanning more than two decks, The Grand Plaza will be the focal point of Celebrity Edge. When entering the space, cruise-goers will see The Chandelier, an art installation and light feature over The Martini Bar. The Chandelier has five levels of over 750 blades and weighs 14,000 pounds.

In the morning, people who go to The Grand Plaza can have a cappuccino and a croissant at either of its cafés. They can go back in the afternoon for tea or a dinner cocktail. Late at night, the space becomes a social gathering place, modeled after old-time ballrooms.

The designers worked on other parts of the ship as well. Jouin Manku designed the exposed corridor incorporating authentic welders’ touches, architects’ markings and engineers’ notes. It showcases the hull of the ship going to and from The Grand Plaza and the main dining rooms.

The designers also worked on the Main Dining Atrium and The Pendulum: an art installation that moves with the ocean to remind cruise-goers that they are connected to the sea.
