Costa's Cash Course: Line Pours $28 Million into Fleet

In an era of cost-saving measures, Costa Cruises has bucked the trend, investing approximately $28 million in the past three months for maintenance on five of the 12 ships in its fleet. Ships that were dry-docked for maintenance included the Costa Serena, Costa Europa, Costa Atlantica, Costa Romantica and Costa Fortuna. Other maintenance was performed Costa Serena, Costa Europa, Costa Atlantica (in Palermo), Costa Romantica (in Genoa) and Costa Concordia (in Trieste) from the end of October 2008 to the end of January 2009.

The Costa Serena began dry-dock in January 28 and will make improvements, including energy- and fuel-saving measures. Additional maintenance performed on the Costa Serena and on the four other Costa ships in dry dock was routine and is carried out on each vessel every two years.  Scheduled hotel operations include the replacement of carpeting, curtains, upholstery and other items and materials that are subject to wear and tear in the public areas.

Costa will welcome two more ships—Costa Luminosa and Costa Pacifica—toward the end of April and the end of May 2009. Three additional ships are on order.
