Watch the Steel Cutting for Virgin Voyages’ New Cruise Ship Here

Curious about Virgin Voyages, the new cruise brand from Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson that’s aiming to lure more Millennials to cruise travel? The new cruise line will be hosting a steel cutting ceremony on Facebook Live for its first new ship Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. EDT, and we’ll be making the video available to you here. Update: The event has concluded, but you can watch the archived video below.

First announced back in 2014 as Virgin Cruises, Virgin Voyages is headed by President and CEO Tom McAlpin, who will host the ceremony along with Fincantieri.

The latest plans for the new cruise line call for its first ship to be delivered in 2020. The ship will homeport in Miami and is expected to offer Caribbean itineraries. The line will aim to offer an experience for the “young at heart,” which includes both Millennial travelers, as well as those looking for more of a boutique cruise experience.

Other plans for the product involve playing up the “voyage” aspect of the branding, with McAlpin describing the intended experience as “bold,” “romantic” and “glamorous” in a 2016 event that shared more details on the new cruise line. That would put the product in line with other Virgin brand experiences, such as Virgin Hotels and Virgin Atlantic.

The line will aim to be eco-friendly, as well. A new partnership with Sweden-based clean energy company Climeon will allow the line’s ships to convert low-grade energy into clean electricity, for a projected savings of up to 5,400 tons of carbon dioxide annually per vessel.
