Celebrating Earth Day in Hawaii

Earth Day is this coming Sunday, and events around the country will give people a chance to show off how green they are. If your clients will be spending the weekend in Hawaii, here are a few suggestions for honoring the environment while having fun in the islands.

In Maui, Lahaina Town Action Committee will host the Banyan Tree's 139th Birthday Party and Earth Day Celebration from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday in Banyan Tree Park, Lahania News is reporting. The festivities will include a farmers' market, live music, artists and hands-on art activities for children.

In Keauhou on Hawaii Island, the Earth & Ocean Festival will take place at the Keauhou Beach Resort Luau Grounds. There will be live entertainment, games, learning activities and cultural demonstrations.

On Saturday, Positive H2O, Surfrider Foundation Maui Chapter, and Community Work Day will host an Earth Day weekend clean-up of Kahului Harbor from 8 am to noon.  Flatbread Pizza will provide lunch to all participants at the end of the event. Even better, Prizes will be awarded to teams who collect the most trash.

And on Sunday, from 10 am until 3 pm, Maui-based sustainable farm O‘o Farm will host the Plant a Wish project, a community event and tree planting ceremony. The event includes complimentary farm tours, access to the farm’s grounds, and the planting of a few native trees on the farm property in the afternoon. The tree planting ceremony will be held at 2pm. O‘o Farm is located at 651 Waipoli Road, in Kula.

Where to Stay
On Hawaii Island, the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai has unveiled the King’s Pond Eco-Crescent, a collection of 65 rooms surrounding the King’s Pond pool that lets guests reduce their carbon footprint during their stay. Enhancements at these rooms incluce ceramic carafes and cups instead of disposable water bottles, refillable pump dispensers instead of small bottles of shampoo and conditioner, reusable rubber spa sandals instead of disposable terrycloth slippers and compact fluorescent light bulbs instead of incandescent light bulbs.

Best of all: All guests staying at the resort on Earth Day, April 22, will have a legacy koa tree planted in their honor, as part of the Resort’s partnership with HLH to plant 500,000 trees on the island.
