Maui News is reporting that a law has gone into effect this week that makes it illegal to use a cellular phone or other mobile electronic devices while driving. An exception to the ban on the use of cellular phones allows drivers to use a hands-free device, such as a Bluetooth.
Drivers with commercial licenses and operators of registered fleet vehicles may use two-way radios while on the job.
Teenagers and other novice drivers cannot use cell phones while driving, even with headsets or earpieces.
First-time offenders face a traffic citation with a fine of up to $100. Those with subsequent offenses could be fined $250 or more.
