Start discussing Fiji tourism and it’s inevitable that the long-awaited InterContinental Resort Fiji at Natadola pops up in conversation. The resort at the western end of Fiji's Coral Coast has been under construction since 2004 and is slated for a soft opening May 9.

Now we hear there’s a new 18-hole golf course right next to the Intercontinental that will open three weeks after the resort’s debut. The golf course was initially designed by Fijian superstar golfer Vijay Singh. After locking horns with the developers, Singh ankled the project, although the par-72 championship course still follows Singh’s original design. What are they going to call the course? Some are saying it will be christened Natadola InterContinental, but all that is still up in the air.

When the InterContinental Resort Fiji opens it will have 216 guest rooms and suites arranged like a traditional Fijian village. We’re waiting for September, when the resort finishes its 55 Club InterContinental hilltop villas. These will have their own private pool area as well as individual plunge pools, spa baths and an exclusive lounge where breakfast, afternoon tea, evening drinks and snacks will be served.
