As Las Vegas continues to grow in popularity, millions more people pour into town every year. And while that’s great for the variety and scope of the incredible amenities Sin City has to offer, it’s making getting around town more challenging than ever.
Just getting in and out of the airport can be a taxing experience if not handled properly. To make the McCarran experience as painless as possible, try to get your clients in either early or late. That means before 11 a. m. or after 5 p. m. This is especially true on Fridays and again on Mondays when conventioneers are getting into town. Mind you, the biggest problem is not the hustle and bustle around the baggage claims; it’s that onerous cab line, which can consume 45 minutes or more if arriving at a busier time of day. Leaving town on Sundays before 3 p.m. will get you stuck at security booths for 30 minutes or more. There have been stories of people getting stuck for 90 minutes or more on a Sunday morning. The best time to fly out of town is on a Friday evening. There are no lines at the airport and flights are so empty everyone typically gets their own row.
Once in town, there are several strategies for getting around. Walking is typically too arduous – going from one end of the Strip at Mandalay Bay and walking to Wynn at the other side will take more than an hour. Cabs are typical but fares rise rapidly, averaging $10-$12 each trip.
The Las Vegas Monorail (www.lvmonorail.com/) is offering an all-day pass for $9 for at least another month, making this a great value to get around cheap. There are stations at many of the casinos on the east side of the Strip, including stations at MGM Grand, Bally's/Paris Las Vegas, Flamingo/Caesars Palace, Harrah's/Imperial Palace, then heading past the Strip down to the Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas Hilton and Sahara.
The Deuce bus (http://www.rtcsouthernnevada.com/deuce/index.htm) is another low fare alternative costing $2 per trip or $5 for an all-day pass. It travels up and down the Strip and downtown 24 hours a day.
