Golf, Cuisine Attracting Late Summer Visitors to Los Cabos

Golf is a major selling point for Los Cabos, with good reason.

"In addition to 340 sunny days a year, low humidity and cooling sea breezes, what makes Los Cabos so special as a golf destination is the physical environment. It's very rare to see tall stony mountains and rugged desert foothills that tumble down to the sea,” Brian McCallen, golf advisor for the Los Cabos Tourism Board, tells Travel Agent

At the moment, visitors will find 14 courses in Cabo laid out by designers such as Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio and Robert Trent Jones II

“All of the courses are fully recovered from last year's hurricane. Looking ahead, a second layout by part-time resident Tiger Woods is in the planning stages at Diamante, a 1,500-acre private resort community,” said McCallen.

As summer draws to a close, discounted green fees are an added enticement for golfers.

The newly renovated Palmilla Golf Club is offering "dynamic pricing" based on demand and availability. Rates care as low as $95 for an 18-hole round on the Jack Nicklaus-designed course.

Segmented pricing through September 30 at Cabo del Sol also offers some good values as well. The complex features designs by Jack Nicklaus (Ocean Course) and Tom Weiskopf (Desert Course). At the Quivira Golf Club, twilight fees are $115 for the Jack Nicklaus-designed course known for its sheer cliffs.

Twilight rates are also available at Cabo Real. The Robert Trent Jones II-designed course features a layout extending from beachfront to desert foothills. And summer season rates continue through the end of October at Cabo San Lucas Country Club. It’s the only course with a view of El Arco and the only course lit for nighttime golf.

Ruben Reachi, the new managing director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board, is keen to emphasize Cabo’s appeal.

“The Dunes course at the Diamante development is the most important course in all of Latin America. It’s rated 52nd in Golf Magazine’s list of the world’s 100 top courses. And we are the only place in the world where Tiger Woods has decided to design a course,” Reachi tells Travel Agent.

McCallen notes that Los Cabos’ overall appeal helps brings in the golf enthusiasts.

“While Los Cabos is the undisputed golf capital of Mexico, it's the off-course activities and adventures that set it apart, from whale-watching cruises to desert jeep tours. There's a wide range of hotels, the restaurants are excellent, and the nightlife is dusk-to-dawn. Cabo has everything golfers are looking for, and more,” said McCallen.

If it’s an enhanced culinary experience those visitors are looking for, direct them to “A Taste of Cabo.”

The inaugural food and wine weekend takes place August 27-30 at Esperanza, an Auberge Resort. The newly reopened Relais & Chateaux property features new dining concepts, an updated pool and spa, plus transformed guestrooms.

“One of the highlights for guests of Esperanza is the incredibly fresh cuisine and cocktails we offer,” Marc Rodriguez, the resort’s general manager tells Travel Agent.

“With our culinary festival, A Taste of Cabo, guests will be able to experience fresh regional produce, reinterpreted by guest chefs in attendance through our interactive cooking demonstrations and signature cocktails in an unforgettable setting,” he adds.
