Good News: Mexico Is Back

We reported last week from Luxury Travel Expo that Ken Pomerantz of MLT Vacations was enthusiastically celebrating the return of Mexico as a prime destination. This is great news for the industry, and particularly home-based travel agents for whom Mexico has traditionally been a big seller.

MLT is adding Los Cabos to its menu of offerings, but good things are happening all over Mexico. Acapulco has once again become a hot destination, and we expect to see growth there in the next year as well as the addition or renovation of major resort properties. Marriott announced this week that it is expanding its presence in Mexico with the addition of 36 Fairfield Inn & Suites hotels throughout the country over the next 10 years. Bill Marriott wrote in his blog, “This is the largest development agreement we've ever signed and we're excited to move quickly to open these brand new properties.” The first of these Fairfield Inn & Suites hotels will open in Cabo San Lucas and Guadalajara in 2011.

Many of the deals that were launched in 2009 as a response to the negative publicity the country was getting are still in place, so now is the time for your clients to jump on them. As word starts to get out that Mexico is on the rise, the prices are sure to follow.
