Hawaii to Refurbish Small Boat Harbor in Maui

The Associated Press is reporting that Hawaii plans to upgrade the Maalaea Small Boat Harbor on Maui. Using state and federal funds, the plan remains to refurbish facilities at the Wailuku harbor that have degraded over time in order to ameliorate any public health and safety concerns.

Included in the project are plans for a new ferry terminal building (where the Maui-Lanai ferry currently operates) and improved parking areas. The habor is a potential wealth of sources for tourism as it includes about 40 commercial permits for Molokini snorkeling, commerical and charter fishing and humpback whale watching.

There will be a meeting held by the state Department of Land and Natural Resources to discuss the project on May 19.
