Hawaiian Airlines has elected not to pursue the addition of another Boeing 767 wide-body aircraft to its fleet, as had been contemplated in an April letter of intent.
Hawaiian cites twin problems for the cancellation: a delay in the date the aircraft was to be in service and an uncertain economic environment. Complications arose in the process of conforming the aircraft to Hawaiian’s operating certificate, which would have delayed its entry into service until the fourth quarter.
“I know many supporters of Hawaiian Airlines’ growth will be disappointed by this decision, however, the prospect of not being able to use this aircraft until very late this year against the backdrop of the recent run-up in fuel prices made this a fairly straight-forward decision,” said Mark Dunkerley, Hawaiian’s president and chief executive officer.
Dunkerley said that the decision does not affect the company’s plans to acquire four additional narrow-body Boeing 717-200 aircraft in the fall to support its expanded interisland operations in Hawaii. Nor does it affect Hawaiian’s commitment to taking delivery of a new, more efficient fleet of long-haul Airbus aircraft starting in 2012.
