India’s Luxury Hotels

Oberoi Udaivilas
The 30-acre Oberoi Udaivilas looks out to Lake Pichola and the Aravalli Hills.

Travelers with a taste for the exotic surely have India on their lists. If you have clients looking to lounge in the lap of Indian luxury, here are four properties you should have on your radar.

The Oberoi Udaivilas, Udaipur

If your clients are first-timers to India, then they will probably want to start in the northwestern state of Rajasthan, with an itinerary that will include popular destinations such as Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and Udaipur. At Udaipur, in the state of Rajasthan, we suggest checking them into the Oberoi Udaivilas.

The property sits on 30 acres overlooking Lake Pichola and the Aravalli Hills. Each of its 87 guest rooms comes with a private terrace that overlooks the lake or the resort’s courtyards, fountains, gardens and pools. The top pick at this property is the Kohinoor Suite, which measures 2,650 square feet and looks out to the city palace and the Aravalli Hills. It also has its own outdoor heated pool, sauna and steam shower. There are also four Luxury Suites with private pools. All rooms have 24-hour butler service.

Dining options include international cuisine at Suryamahal and Indian fare at Udaimahal. The hotel bar is open 24 hours a day and serves light snacks.

It wouldn’t be a trip to India without some Ayurveda. The spa at The Oberoi Udaivilas takes up two floors and includes eight therapy suites. Each therapist is a trained professional in Ayurveda and aromatherapy techniques. Private yoga, meditation and pranayam sessions are held daily.

Aman New Delhi
The spa at the Aman New Delhi has eight treatment rooms.

Aman New Delhi

Continuing on in the traditional Golden Triangle route in the north, your clients will next arrive in New Delhi. Here, we suggest checking them into Aman New Delhi, the luxury hotel chain’s newest property in India, where they will get the best of both worlds—resort isolation within a bustling city center.

The property, adjacent to the Delhi Golf Course, has one nine-story building with 39 rooms and suites with private plunge pools, and a second building of five floors with 28 deluxe suites in one-, two- and three-bedroom configurations, half of which have private pools.

No doubt the three-bedroom Lodhi Suites is the top pick at this hotel. Each suite has a living and dining area and a pantry for butler service, as well as a terrace and private pool.

Dining options range from über-elegant at The Aman and The Lodhi restaurants, to chic and relaxed vibes at the Tapas Lounge and Wine Cellar. The property also has an eight-treatment room spa with two traditional Hammam steam baths and bamboo garden relaxation areas.

The resort’s proximity to the city center is a major asset as it is close to Delhi’s historical monuments, museums and shopping.

Jai Mahal Palace

Jaipur is another popular destination for travelers on a northern India adventure, and you won’t go wrong sending them to Taj Hotels, Resorts & Palaces’ Jai Mahal Palace.

Once the residence of the prime minister of Jaipur, the hotel combines the 19th-century elegance of India with modern-day comforts. The former palace sits on 18 acres of gardens with 100 rooms and six suites.

All  rooms come with tea/coffee makers, minibar, safe, TV and Wi-Fi, but the Luxury Suites go the extra distance with a separate sitting area and distinct themes, including Topaz, Crystal, Jaipur, Peacock and Gangaur.

In addition to serving Indian classics at Cinnamon, the new pan-Indian restaurant, the hotel boasts a variety of other dining experiences, from international at the Marble Arch to alfresco Italian at Giardino. Several lounges and bars round out the options.

Your high-end clients will no doubt expect a spa, and Jai Mahal delivers with its Jiva Spa, Taj Hotels’ signature brand. But the property also has some surprises, such as an on-call astrologer; an outdoor, life-size chess game; and camel buggy rides.

Agent Advice

Ellison Poe of Poe Travel recommends visiting Varanasi if the time of year is right. “This is just an incredible trip, but you have to listen to your client because it isn’t for everyone,” she says. “It is a very spiritual place for the Hindus. To visit it is like making a pilgrimage.” They consider it an honor to bring their dead here to have them cremated on funeral pyres before placing the ashes on the Ganges River, Poe adds.

The spa is done up with natural light and petal tones and occupies two floors. There are eight treatment rooms along with a dedicated Ayurveda room, experience showers, ice fountain and a crystal steam room. The spa’s signature treatment is the Synchronized Indulgence.

With your clients’ bodies refreshed, it’s time to satisfy their appetites. Executive Chef Clinton Cooper serves up a fusion of European and Indian cultures at café PRATO & Bar. At San-Qi, four chefs oversee unique Japanese, Chinese, Indian and Thai cuisines. Guests who want a laid-back atmosphere should head to Aer, which offers hot and cold Lebanese and Middle Eastern dips along with tapas.
