Minor Damage After Heavy Winds Push Cruise Ships Together

Remember how embarrassing that was when you tried to pull out of the supermarket parking lot without looking and hit that car waiting behind you?  Don’t feel bad.  Even million ton cruise ships get into fender-benders.

Well, sort of.  If they had fenders.

Late yesterday, a Carnival cruise ship leaving Cozumel, Mexico brushed against a Royal Caribbean ship docked nearby, leaving both ships damaged.

In a statement to USA TODAY, Royal Caribbean says that its 2,446-passenger Enchantment of the Seas was hit by the 2,124-passenger Carnival Legend when strong winds pushed Carnival’s ship against it.

Both ships sustained broken glass and minor damage to open deck areas.  As of yet, no injuries have been reported, and each line states that the damage to their respective ships is not enough to interfere with remainder of their itinerates.

According to Carnival, all of the appropriate Mexican authorities have been notified, and it is cleared to proceed to its next port of call in Belize.  As a serendipitous chance of fate this also happens to be the next port of call for The Enchantment.  Let’s hope they don’t have any run-ins there.
