New Attractions of Barbados

Ocean Two
Ocean Two is an inviting romantic getaway.

In a recent meeting with representatives of the Barbados Tourism Authority, Travel Agent learned about some new additions to the island that should result in a boost of arrivals to the island as well as few extra bucks for your pocket.

New Hotels: February marked the opening of the first Courtyard Bridgetown by Marriott in Barbados. The hotel, in the Garrison Historic Area in Hastings, Christ Church, has unveiled its redefined courtyard lobby and newly designed guest rooms.

The 118-room property gives its guests convenient access to the city of Bridgetown, local attractions, restaurants and nightlife. Its restaurant, Centro, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is an outdoor swimming pool, fitness center, guest laundry and business center. The enlarged business library has several complimentary computer terminals, as well as separate computer stations dedicated to printing airline boarding passes and checking flight status. Rates begin at $249 per night.

Also, Ocean Two, a four-star, beachfront resort opened in May on Dover Beach, on the south coast of Barbados. With poolside cabanas, one- and two- bedroom suites, private balconies, an on-site weddings and events facility, spa treatments and a fully equipped gym, Ocean Two is great pitch for clients looking to get married, celebrate a honeymoon or enjoy a simple romantic getaway.

Culinary Enhancements: Barbados is slowly rising to the top of the list of Caribbean culinary giants and the island’s offerings are only getting better. The recently opened Cin Cin by the Sea on the west coast highlights Mediterranean-style cuisine and alfresco dining, with impressive views of the Caribbean Sea.

Also, renowned local Chef Peter Edey has recently opened Scotch Bonnet Restaurant and Pastry House in Green Hill, St. Michael, with a new and exciting concept. The restaurant is based on the premise that there should be local food available to the public after the normal lunch hours.

New Shopping Center: Limegrove, the island’s premier shopping and lifestyle center, is now open. The complex incorporates more than 75 boutique shops, including Louis Vuitton, M.A.C. and Ralph Lauren, as well as restaurants, delis, cafes, bars, a night club, cinemas, and a fitness center and spa, all built around three themed courtyards. The complex will host events and fashion shows with many retailers inspired to create unique experiences, such as the live mannequins in the windows at Agent Provocateur.

Wi-Fi Milestone: On November 11, Barbados became the only nation with free Wi-Fi access, from bus stop to rum shop, as part of an agenda to expand technology to the local residents and create a better tourism product. The project, called 11.11.11 ON, was initiated by the Barbados Entrepreneurship Foundation in its quest to make Barbados the top entrepreneurial hub in the world by 2020.
