In Quito, the long awaited construction of a new international airport, to be located some 20 minutes outside of the capital, is currently underway. The new Quito International Airport will be constructed on an area of about 3,700 acres, almost 13 times the size of the current international airport. Further improving air travel to and from the city, the airport will be located at a lower altitude of 7,874 feet, expanding the air traffic area and will be able handle some five million passengers a year by 2010, and some 7.5 million by 2030.
