Peru is limiting access to parts of Machu Picchu through May 31 as part of a pilot program to secure the preservation and sustainable use of the archaeological site, Promperu, the country’s official tourism organization, tells Travel Agent. The destination as a whole will remain open to the public all year round on its regular schedule, from 6:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Promperu said.
As part of the pilot program, through May 21, access to certain sites in Machu Picchu will be limited as follows:
- Temple of the Sun: Open 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
- Temple of the Condor: Open 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
- Intiwatana Pyramid: Open 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
From May 22 through May 28, the times will be:
- Intiwatana Pyramid: Open 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
- Temple of the Condor: Open 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
- Temple of the Sun: Open 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The pilot program is aimed at securing the preservation and sustainable use of Machu Picchu, Promperu said. The project will serve to adopt new regulatory measurements that will come into effect June 1.
“Tourism in Peru is one of the country’s main economic activities,” Promperu said. “Peruvian public and private sectors are responsibly working to make this activity sustainable in order to benefit locals and international tourists.”
