Pilots' Strike Grounds Finnair Flights

United Press International and other sources are reporting that a pilots' strike has forced the Finnish flag-carrier Finnair to find lodging for thousands of stranded passengers around the country.

The air carrier could not confirm how many passengers needed rooms, but did say all of its scheduled flights for Tuesday were canceled, Helsingin Sanomat reported.

The airline said it routed as many passengers as it could onto other carriers and would find lodgings for others, while promising that its chartered tourist flights to holiday destinations would continue as planned, mostly via other charter companies, the newspaper said.

Discussions with the nearly 800 striking pilots resumed Tuesday, officials said.

"We are ready to negotiate, if an invitation were forthcoming," Kristian Rintala, president of the Finnish Air Line Pilots Association, told Helsingin Sanomat.
