madridStrikes protesting rising unemployment and austerity measures have disrupted travel across Europe, NBC News reports.

Striking workers in Spain and Portugal have staged a general strike that has forced flight cancellations and shut down ground transport. In Belgium, striking workers disrupted international rail service and in Greece, Italy and France workers have also planned solidarity protests.

Hundreds of flights between southern Europe and London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Amsterdam Schiphol airports have been canceled.

Unions have planned further demonstrations across Spain and Portugal, with a major event planned for 6:30 p.m. Madrid time (12:30 p.m. EST) on Wednesday, November 13, 2012.
