BBC News is reporting that a 4.9-magnitude quake hit the Cusco, Peru region in the early hours of Sunday. At least eight people have died in the earthquake in southern Peru, officials announced on Sunday.

Worst affected was the remote Andean village of Misca, where 45 homes collapsed killing four children and four adults, emergency workers said. The authorities have declared a state of emergency and President Ollanta Humala has said his government will help rebuild the village.

President Humala said emergency workers had managed to clear the road leading to the village and a plane had been able to land in the area to drop off tents and blankets.
