Long before Sandals Resorts International transformed the Four Seasons Exuma into one of the best all-inclusive resorts in the tropics, the company already had a legendary resort in The BahamasSandals Royal Bahamian Spa Resort & Offshore Island.

But with the attention focused on the Exuma resort, Sandals Emerald Bay, the company’s original Bahamian resort began to fall by the wayside.

And then 2012 came around.

Just when the Royal Bahamian started to get overshadowed by Sandals Emerald Bay, the company decided to plunk down $17 million to refurbish the property’s Balmoral Tower and essentially put the resort back in the forefront of Bahamian all-inclusive hotels.

Contemporary Look of New Balmoral Tower

We were on hand in late March when Sandals Resorts unveiled its refurbished Balmoral Tower. After undergoing a $17 million renovation, the Balmoral Tower now features a lighter, contemporary look and even more luxury.

The rooms and suites in the Balmoral Tower now have travertine-style oversized rectangle tiling instead of carpet, mahogany entertainment units with a 42-inch plasma TV, a bar and refrigerator, neutral draperies with open-weave sheers, and large-scale area rugs featuring teal, charcoal and amber accents.

The renovated bathrooms include contemporary stained mahogany his-and-her vanities with Carrera marble tops, backlit mirrors, and showers that feature white beveled subway tiles with blue, cream and amber glass accent tiles. The most exciting feature is the large balconies that were added to 35 of the oceanview rooms.

An additional 11 ground-floor rooms have now become walk-out rooms, providing direct access to the newly finished white concrete pool deck, which incorporates local fauna and conch shells. Beachfront fire pits and an expanded lounge area complete the Balmoral Tower’s new look.

Best Rooms

We were told that some of the best rooms in the new tower are the Balmoral Tower Beachfront Penthouse with Butler Service, situated on the top floor. They have unobstructed views of the ocean. The rooms have been recently refurbished; each room has a West Indian mahogany four-poster bed, top-of-the-range plasma TV, French silk rugs and more.

In addition to a dining area, they are within close proximity to the resort’s Fitness Centre and come complete with an enormous private balcony, which includes chaise lounges with dining tables and balcony chairs, and impressive vistas of the beach. These rooms, as the name suggests, come with a personal butler.

Clients could also book the Grand Bahamian Beachfront Walkout with Butler Service. This newly refurbished butler category occupies an exclusive position on the ground floor of the Balmoral Tower, just steps away from the beach. Each one provides Sandals’ exclusive butler service and is generously proportioned and features an expansive bedroom. It is complemented by a luxurious en-suite bathroom that features beveled bisque-tiled walls and his-and-her vanities with backlit mirrors and shower. French-style doors lead to a private patio that provides views of the ocean, beach and the resort’s private island, Sandals Cay.

Lastly, clients should consider the Kensington Luxury Beachfront Concierge. The suite is complemented by a luxurious en-suite bathroom and sliding doors that lead to an oversized private balcony where magnificent views await.

Property Refresher

Located on Nassau’s renowned Cable Beach, Sandals Royal Bahamian is approximately 10 minutes from Lynden Pindling International Airport, 20 minutes from Downtown Nassau and Bay Street, and roughly 30 minutes from Paradise Island.

In 1946, the original resort “The Balmoral Club” was created to be the playground for many of the royal friends of the then-Governor of The Bahamas, the Duke of Windsor. The architecture portrays an elaborate sophistication, Roman columns and a large 25-foot tall statuary guard at the entrance to the porte-cochere.

Among Sandals Royal Bahamian’s top selling points are its butler service; Rolls Royce or Mercedes transfers for select suite categories; Sandals Cay, the resort’s private offshore island; 10 dining options featuring an array of cuisine from French to Bahamian; and the Fred Kassner Conference Center, which is able to accommodate up to 540 people banquet-style and 1,000 persons theater-style.

Sandals Royal Bahamian is the only resort in Nassau’s with its own private offshore island. Features on this island, Sandals Cay, include freshwater pool, swim-up pool bar, whirlpool, Café Goombay and the resort’s famous Zen Garden (Red Lane Spa). A ferry runs every hour, beginning at 10 a.m. and returns from the island at a quarter to the hour, with the last ferry returning at 4:45 p.m.

Sandals Royal Bahamian Spa Resort & Offshore Island consists of 404 rooms and suites with 23 categories on 15 acres. All rooms include mahogany four-poster king-size beds; a refrigerator, private bath and shower and more.

The resort’s rooms for the physically challenged include rails in the bathroom, a large bath, and a vanity area, which is large enough for full wheelchair turning radius. A shower bench and extended showerhead are available upon request. The Suite Concierge Service includes in-room bar, daily newspaper, full bath, DVD and free DVD library (available in the Concierge Lounge) and more. Butler service includes everything from unpacking and packing a client’s luggage to attending to a guest’s wardrobe and serving breakfast on the balcony. Butler Suites also feature a cordless phone, DVD player and premium liquor.
