On Site: Cotton Tree Resort in Grand Cayman Looks to Expand

GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands – During our recent trip to the luxury cottage boutique Cotton Tree resort, Travel Agent sat down with Heather Lockington, owner of the resort, and learned that the nearly two-year-old property is already planning to expand.

Lockington, who opened the four-cottage resort in late 2009, said she is looking to purchase the properties on both the right and left side of her resort with plans of putting up some additional cottages. Although she didn’t give us an exact number on the additional cottages, she did say the plan would call for some one-bedroom cottages. The cottages at the property now are all two bedrooms, making them more suitable for smaller families. The idea of the expansion is to add some more couples-friendly rooms.

Lockington says she is merely waiting on the offers from both property owners to come down before she decides whether or not to purchase the additional land. If the plans ultimately become finalized, don’t expect an expansion to be completed until at least 2013.

This is been a pretty fast start for Lockington and her unique resort, Grand Cayman’s only true boutique property. Since opening, the resort has already become a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World and Lockington has already received a lucrative to offer to sell the property.

“Maybe someday I’ll sell,” she says, “but right now this is all about living my dream and continuing to build on something truly special in Grand Cayman.”
